David Renfro - Fall 2005

In this edition of the Arkansas IHS newsletter, we welcome David Renfro as the newest resident horn professional in the state of Arkansas. His primary reason for moving to Little Rock is to assume the duties as Principal horn of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. He has already proven himself to be friendly, intelligent, and musically talented, and the season will be exciting as the "new" ASO horn section works together. I asked if he'd mind sharing some information about himself. Here is David's biography:

"A native of Kingsport, Tennessee, David Renfro received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in horn performance from Indiana University. his primary teachers have included Myron Bloom (former principal of the Cleveland Orchestra), Michael Hatfield (former principal of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra), and Richard Seraphinoff (formerly with the Detroit Symphony). In recent years, David has performed with the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra (KY), Greenville Symphony Orchestra (SC), the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra (IN) and the Columbus Philharmonic Orchestra (IN), as well as the Camerata Orchestra and Bloomington Pops Orchestra, both located in Bloomington, Indiana. Currently, David resides in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he is the Principal Horn for the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra (ASO), and where he teaches students from beginners to college students. In addition to his duties with the orchestra, David will be performing with the ASO Brass quintet, and Etesian Winds, a woodwind quintet comprised of members of the ASO. Beginning in January 2006, David will also be teaching horn at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. David spends his summers teaching at the Music at Maple Mount music festival in Maple Mount, Kentucky."

Here are the answers to your others F.A.Q.s:

Instrument: Currently, I am playing a Meister Hans Hoyer 7801 "Heritage" that was co-developed by Myron Bloom and Vincent DeRosa.

Hobbies: Building and working with computers, reading, electronic gaming, golf (although you wouldn't guess it if you saw me play!), and Ultimate Frisbee.

Other Musical Interests: I find it therapeutic to compose and arrange music, but I don't take the time to write very often. As far as the horn is concerned, I like doing my own repair work and am trying to learn about those things I don't yet know how to do.

Favorite Music to Listen to: There's way too much to choose from amongst the standard rep, but some of my more ordinary favorites include traditional Celtic music, phase music, and other modern compositions by Steve Reich, anything by Arvo Part, and interesting electronica." (I don't know, David--sounds kind of risque to me!!)

Again, please welcome David to the Natural State and come hear him perform with the ASO!
